In September 2025 I traveled to Mile 46 outside Nairobi, Kenya to participate in Mile 46 Art for Change painting murals with a group of local and international artists.

For 10 days we painted murals in the village with much support from local residents and volunteers.

The mural is a portrait of Charles Samperu, a leader in the community and pioneer of the mural project who passed away shortly before we arrived at Mile 46. The wall chosen for his portrait is the main wall of the town’s Saturday market, now known as the Charles Samperu Market.

Also part of the mural is a trompe-l'œil portrait of Art for Change founder Eirik Jarl Trondsen painting his iconic abstract faces as part of the town’s landscape.

Partnership with Seneca artist Lauren Jimerson and Reconnect Rochester.

Curb extension murals at the intersection of Broad & Fitzhugh St in Rochester, NY — an effort to improve road safety by implementing traffic calming measures at select locations in Rochester. Each mural represents one of the eight clans of the Seneca Nation. Mural surface area ranges from 56 sq ft to 270 sq ft. Each mural was created using hand-cut Tyvek stencils and painted with asphalt-marking paint.

Artist Statement: The concept for the SmART Streets intersection mural at Broad & Fitzhugh is an homage to the indigenous history of the area, including its native plant and animal life. Rather than honoring the white settlement of the city, this mural is dedicated to the Seneca people in honor of their millenium long stewardship and rightful claim of the land we call Rochester. The mural is based on the design of the Seneca Nations flag featuring the 8 clans of the Seneca people (Deer, Heron, Bear, Turtle, Snipe, Beaver, Hawk, and Wolf clans) and incorporates native keystone plant species such as sweetgrass, wild strawberry, beech and alder trees.

An interactive mural project for the entry sidewalk at the Phillis Wheatley Library in Rochester, commissioned by Commonground Health via its HealthiKids/PlayROCS initiative.

The concept was designed around input from the library community, including staff, neighbors, parents, and youth patrons.

The game concept is an interactive Shoots & Ladders style version of the nearby Ford st roundabout, with pathways to different Rochester historical guides and places. On your journey you’ll meet first black female poet Phillis Wheatley, famed Reverend Thomas James, and pioneering educator Alice Young. You’ll end up in the famous Clarissa Street jazz corridor during its heyday and opt to play your instrument on the corner for cars driving by. Each stop on the road is marked by an Ubuntu symbol noting what virtue you will learn from the guide you meet there. On your route you’ll also have the option to take the shortcut through the park, or jump into “The Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats and follow the footsteps to meet its main character, Peter.

If you enter the library from the parking lot, visitors can add their own designs in the pond water Chalk Zone, and then follow the hungry caterpillar to play ASL Hopscotch into the library. Players can practice hand symbols for numbers 1-10 as they jump between lily pads. You win if you get all the way to the butterfly!

Throughout the project, I sought answers to questions like “what feelings or desires brought you to this space, and what value do you find in it?”

The media and surface for each portrait, whether colored pencil, watercolor, plant collage, wood or canvas, was adapted to best reflect each person’s character and strengths, elicited during interviews.

This mural was inspired by my combined passion for urban gardening, creating public art, and the love I have for my hometown of Rochester. I feel very connected to the local urban gardening community, and was excited by the opportunity to honor that community as well as to depict my vision of the future of gardening in the city. I wanted to bring to life Rochester as I imagine it, moving toward a green & abundant future.

This mural is a tribute to the late Edgar SantaCruz, a beloved Rochester community member.

Edgar was an extraordinary person. He was a social worker, activist, community garden steward and volunteer. He embodied pure presence, compassion, and an ego-less drive to action. He was hilarious, friendly, easygoing, and generous, and he treated every person with the exact same kindness and lack of judgement. With so much life left to live, Edgar was tragically hit by a car on December 22, 2022 while walking his dog, Rosie, and they left this world together.

Edgar and Rosie will live on here, in the garden of his creating. Each plant symbolizes Edgar’s relationship to the world, and what he meant to our community.

Dandelions are for overcoming hardship, while larkspur embodies Edgar’s fun-loving nature, levity & generosity. A tall sunflower represents his brightness of being, loftiness and loyalty. The forget-me-nots in the center represent his lasting gifts to so many, and the perennial place he will hold in our hearts. Mistletoe above the door marks Edgar’s passing at Christmastime and blesses “a meeting place where no violence can take place.

This mural is part of the City’s Percent for the Arts Program, under the theme “My Rochester,” an exploration of what Rochester means to artists and different communities. Edgar’s legacy embodies the theme of “My Rochester,” his essence and hopes for the future that many of us share.

This mural depicts an imagining of an ecologically restored Onondaga Lake, located outside Syracuse, NY. The scenery includes native species of plants and animals that thrived in the area before the lake's 30-year long mercury contamination by Honeywell, the company now responsible for the lake's ongoing remediation.

In the mural, the lake is surrounded by native plant species of asters, goldenrod & rudbeckia. In the foreground is a white cedar stand with moss, blue bead lily, mayapple, goldthread, beavers, and now extinct passenger pigeons.

The mural is located in Illick Hall, the home of the Department of Environmental Biology and Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. The latter is chaired by the acclaimed author and indigenous botanist, Robin Wall Kimmerer (pictured) who's book, "Braiding Sweetgrass" was the inspiration for the mural. Also pictured is Ecologist Catherine Landis, ESF professor and research scholar of the ecology of Onondaga Lake.

This mural was a collaboration between myself and artists Richmond Futch, Jaci Ayorinde, TARO, and a group of 4 young Rochester Baha'i Center artists (age 10-18).

The mural is located on a street-facing wall at St. Joseph's House of Hospitality in Rochester, NY. The concept was to demonstrate a "spirit led" approach to making a mural. Each artist based their contribution solely off Richmond's title, "Revelation Rochester," and the imagery developed organically from there. Richmond and I had previously partnered to paint a series of book spine murals at a local library. Richmond's experience as a retired pastor and volunteer art teacher at St. Joseph's led him to initiate the project and recruit me as partner. :

My contributions include the iris, chrysanthemum and lotus flowers. Each flower has a symbolic meaning related to the mural's theme of revitalization and represents an element of the positive transformation Rochester is experiencing.

The blue chrysanthemum represents the end of a heartbreak. Learning from and accepting the tragedy of love lost, the healing can now begin. Chrysanthemums can also represent rebirth, and they are often chosen to commemorate an important time of transformation or a new beginning in one’s life.

Lotus flowers are symbols of strength, resilience, and rejuvenation. The lotus returns to the murky water each evening and open their blooms at the break of day. Lotuses root themselves in the mud, their stems reaching upward to break through the water. There, the unlikely blossoms grow, and the pristine lotus flower unfolds. Rochester witnesses ongoing hardships, it has been plenty submerged in the murky water of trauma. After every brutal winter, we somehow push ourselves up out of the mud to receive the sunshine, and open up again.

The purple iris is a symbol of enduring faith, hope & valor. Despite the change of seasons, the iris always re-emerges in late spring and lasts through the summer. The iris reminds us to be patient, stay hopeful, and seek out the true and ethical path despite the temptation of earlier but less sustaining blooms. In Ancient China, people believed that placing irises around a door or inside a home would keep negative energies away. The iris is viewed as a protector and positive influence, and I hope it serves that purpose here at St Joes.

This community garden shed mural was funded by a mini-grant through Rochester's WALL\THERAPY initiative. WALL\THERAPY is a non-profit that has funded the creation of numerous murals throughout Rochester since 2012. This shed is located at the St. Mark's & St. John's Episcopal Church E.D.E.N. Denver St Garden. The plants depicted reflect those previously grown in the garden including tithonia, yarrow, sunflower, collard greens and swiss chard. A group of garden volunteer youth engaged through St. Mark's & St. John's assisted in preparing the shed wall and painting the blue background.

This mural is located in Rochester at the former Greenhouse Cafe, a unique urban architectural space with an aquaponics greenhouse. The mural represents the diversity of life inside the greenhouse, including the fish that feed the system, the lacewings and ladybugs that control pests, and the herbs and vegetables that prosper thanks to these natural partnerships. The continuous background geometric pattern was employed to visually weave together the individual components of the mural, reflecting the interconnectedness and mutual dependence of the ecosystem it depicts.

“The Four Seasons” murals are visualizations of the prophecies found in Hosea, 14 of the Old Testament, “O israel, return unto the Lord thy God; for thou hast fallen by thine iniquity.”

This passage was chosen as the inspiration for this series for its message of revival following a period of darkness, in acknowledgment of the countless difficulties faced during the pandemic. These struggles, brought on by the iniquity of Covid-19 and its decades-long causation (unsustainable choices made by humankind in favor of economic growth) can only be matched with relentless optimism, and a hope to transform ourselves and our reality for the better. I find great hope in the reminder that “after the plague came the renaissance.”

Each mural represents one line from this passage, while incorporating plant & bird symbolism from biblical and cultural sources. By combining these symbols, each season represents a set of spiritual virtues, which unite to form a healthy, resilient, spiritual whole.

1. SPRING (Eastern Bluebird, Orange Daylily, Lily of the Valley)

Symbolism: New Beginnings, Prosperity, Gratitude

Hosea, 14.5. “I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon.”

2. SUMMER (Release Dove, Olive Tree)

Symbolism: Peace, Wisdom

14.6. “His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his smell as Lebanon.”

3. FALL (Great Blue Heron, Grapes, Corn)

Symbolism: Balance, Patience, Fertility

14.7. “They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the corn, and grow as the vine: the scent thereof shall be as the wine of Lebanon.”

4. WINTER (Red Cardinal, Fir Tree)

Symbolism: Hope, Perseverance

14.8. “Ephraim shall say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have heard him, and observed him: I am like a green fir tree. From me is thy fruit found.”

A feminist, satirical reimagining of the common biblical depictions of The Adoration of the Magi. This piece is a comment on the overvaluing of motherhood and society's worship of the human child. Why are non-human species not similarly adored and cherished? What is the meaning of motherhood to a childless shepherdess?

Acrylic portrait of painter, Frida Kahlo and tribute to her use of imagery and color.

An example of a salvaged end table painted and refurbished in an art nouveau style, with imagery taken from Alphonse Mucha's "Summer." The painting is an idealized depiction of Eve, the original woman, atop three legs, one for each of the three primary colors. The pairing of color and subject evokes the primary essences which give life to all subsequent creation and colors.

As part of my practice, I often recover tables, doors, and other discarded household items and bring them to my studio for transformation into functional art objects, which I sell or barter as a means to support my ongoing experimentation.

Selections from a duo exhibition with artist Kaitlin Roney, titled “Nothing Ethereal About Her,” this series centered around contemporary re-imaginings of traditional Greek goddesses. The title of the exhibition was taken from a line in "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" by author Thomas Hardy, which tells a tragic allegorical tale of the feminine spirit, doomed.

Persephone : The piece represents the story of Persephone, Greek goddess of the Dead and the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture. This piece shows Persephone as a victim and survivor who still bears the signs of her annual kidnapping and rape by Hades. She has only just emerged from her first experience in the underworld; her shirt is still rumpled and her eyes hold shadows. The birch trees symbolize hope and new beginnings as she emerges from the horror of her captivity. She looks toward the sun and sees healing in her future. The sprout is a reminder that our feminine nature is to find a way to grow and survive despite oppression and darkness.

Hera: Naive yet powerful, Hera has just been spurned for the first time by her adulterous husband, Zeus. The young Goddess of the Home has been pricked by the yellow rose of infidelity, and vows revenge against her husband’s mistresses.

Athena: The Warrior Goddess, Athena has left maidenhood and begun her journey across the Mediterranean to fight alongside the Athenians, demonstrating expertise and justice in war.

Demeter: Here, the Goddess of Agriculture and mother of the doomed Persephone is still young, hopeful and childless, cradling a hen as she graces the land with an abundance of fertility.

Festival themed mural done for Atlas Hostel in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, Spain. Acrylic.

The Los Indianos Festival, or the Carnaval de Santa Cruz de La Palma, is celebrated each year in honor of the "Indians," or the returnees from Cuba during the nineteenth century. The Indians had emigrated to Latin America and returned home years later bringing tales of wealth and prosperity. The procession marches throughout the streets of Las Palmas dressed from head to toe in white and throws masses of talcum powder in the air. 

The figure's white garb and Panama hat represent the traditional dress worn at the Los Indianos festival. The style of the mural is inspired by the European Art Nouveau and artist Alphonse Mucha.

Pigeons are an important symbol of pride in Gran Canaria as well, as they were the first people in the world to use carrier pigeons to transport messages. For many years, Canarians had contests to determine which pigeon could deliver a message the longest distance.

Illustrating the concept of mutual symbiosis in urban communities. Neighborhoods and cities are examples of symbiotic relationships that have the potential to be successful and sustainable. Both the city itself and individual citizens reap benefits when we all work together and build off one another's skills and offerings. The imagery of plants and nature growing off of a turtle's shell relate the idea of social/economic symbiosis to the same systems that take place in nature.

My concept illustration incorporates the the natural world of pollination and the human activities that support our environment to show how these two vibrant ecosystems are interconnected. The upper half of the illustration depicts a human hand unfolding to release a host of pollinating species entwined with partner plants & fungi (including echinacea, dandelion, ironweed, columbine, and reishi mushrooms). Pollen spores blow outward into the surrounding negative space in a show of vitality and fertile abundance. The lower image depicts a colorful, climate-minded urban ecosystem replete with fruit trees, urban farms, front yard vegetable gardens, renewable energy (wind, solar, wood burning), carbon neutral transportation (walking, biking) and politically engaged citizens living a pollinator friendly lifestyle. Wind energy, sunlight and clean air from the trees and activity below drift upward to power the healthy microcosm above. The colors of the houses and clothing below are a mirror of nature’s vibrant colors above, reflecting the similarities of humans and pollinators daily activities. A house is a habitat & charging station for us just as a flower serves this role for a bee, hummingbird, or ladybug.

The inspiration for this concept and my interest in submitting a piece for consideration is based in part on my work as founder of a community gardening organization in Rochester, NY called 490 Farmers. The garden began as vacant land in 2018 and now encompasses a half acre of pollinator gardens, plots for rent, a food forest, children’s garden, bee hives and more. The space has been built and funded entirely by the community, and provides a natural respite in the middle of downtown Rochester for humans and many other species. In the years I’ve spent working on this project I have learned so much about the importance of pollinators and how a healthy garden ecosystem negotiates the perfect balance between the “little things” and the humans that visit and steward it.

All of the plant and insect reference photographs used for this illustration were taken at the 490 Farmers space by our organization’s president and avid gardener, Karen Soanes. The street scene is based on an eco-friendly vision of my neighborhood, using photos taken from my studio window.

My mural combines imagery of three iconic downtown buildings (Sibley Building, Chase Tower, and Kodak) along with the symbolic Rochester lilacs and the City of Rochester flower logo. Two examples of pedestrian interventions centered around the idea of spontaneous play, sponsored by Healthi Kids PlayRocs initiative. Projects were designed and drawn out then opened for public participation during a community painting day.

1. Lexington Ave Community Farm (Foodlink) “Find your way back to the hive!” This piece is a bee-based hopscotch that teaches passersby about the different types of bees in a hive, plus what predators to avoid, and what type of flowers they seek out for pollen.

2. “Swillburg Pig’s Mud Maze” lets you play in the mud and follow the Swillburg pig’s muddy maze back to Rochester.

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion mural for the front hallway entrance at TJ Connor Elementary in Scottsville, NY. The mural includes the American Sign Language finger spelling of Unity, a soaring dove for peace, tree and book symbolizing the growth of knowledge, and the LGBTQ pride rainbow. Depicted in the mural is a pile of books chosen by teen volunteers, opening up into female superhero comic strip (concept created by Library Teen Center helpers). Taking you across the hall you fall into a diverse universe and cosmos of ethnic backgrounds, and a set of interactive angel wings. Acrylic, 2018.
